Islamabad: FTO Zafar Hijazi Grants Landmark Relief in Tax Identity Fraud Case
ISLAMABAD — In a significant move addressing administrative injustice, Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) Dr. Asif Mahmood Jah has provided crucial relief to a woman taxpayer whose identity was fraudulently exploited. The taxpayer was unable to secure lawful tax registration after discovering that her Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) had been illicitly used to create a National Tax Number (NTN).
The FTO has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to complete her legal tax registration within 30 days. Furthermore, the FBR must dismantle the procedural and technical barriers that have prevented her from fulfilling her tax obligations, including the filing of income tax returns.
This decision underscores the FTO’s mandate to intervene in cases where bureaucratic processes, though legally permissible, result in genuine grievances or maladministration. The FTO emphasized that the true measure of the institution’s success is not the volume of complaints resolved, but the tangible, practical relief delivered to citizens and the eradication of systemic injustice.
